I’m writing a novel, and I want to know… Do publishers look for a particular number for a first book?
Novel – over 40,000 words
Novella – 17,500 to 40,000 words
Novelette – 7,500 to 17,500 words
Short story – under 7,500 words
They don’t look for just any number, as other answers said, it depends on the audience.

I have sent many letters, not manuscripts mind, via email. Just a brief, concise letter asking if they would be considerate enough to read one chapter. They don’t bother to reply or send a computerised note saying "no". How on earth do new authors get through the barriers?
