So I am somewhat writing a book and I have been starting to get a little curious as to how fantasy books have changed or stayed the same over the years. I have looked at a lot of websites but they haven’t really answered my question and I would really like someones input on this.
Thank you so much to anyone who answers! =)

Fantasy books in the past tended to take place in an idealized medieval land (castles, fair maidens, dragons, knights in shining armor, etc.), Greco-Roman mythology settings, or "barbarian" heroes saving damsels from either classic mythological or wholly author-invented creatures. Though you still see a lot of this, today’s fantasy is just as likely to take place in modern urban settings (that’s actually a major sub-genre), involve novel interpretations of classically "understood" creatures, or even futuristic (or not-so-futuristic, like, say, a steampunk King Arthur) fusions of science and sorcery.

Yes I’ve read Hunger Games series, however I was very put off by all her stupid boy trouble so I’m kinda looking for books with a similar setting minus (or with just less of) the romances that are just more of a bother than anything else.

Graceling Series by Kristin Cashore (Hint of romance)

Inkheart Series – Cornelia Funke (AWESOME)

The Fetch– Laura Whitcomb (Now, I want to say that the whole book screams it’s a romance but there were about 2 sentences concerning whatever ‘romance’ there was, this book would be excellent for fantasy readers but I found it boring because there was absolutely zero romance and it’s just about dystopian stuff.)

The Shadow of the Wind – Carlos Ruiz Zafon (I will be honest and say that this would be the best book ever if they subtracted the whole whiny "I love her, I want her. make her love me." It’s mentioned once or twice and parts of story have to do with it but the book is VERY good that you can ignore it.)

I have read the percy jackson series, the kane chronicles, the heroes of olympus series, the Alex rider series, and more.Do you have any suggestions for any teen action and fantasy books?

Hi, you might want to try my fantasy series, entitled The Tales of Tanglewood, lightly influenced by Irish folklore and Celtic mythology. The first two books in the series are called "The Lon Dubh Whistle" and "The Curse of Satyr Stump"

You can download the first few chapters of each book for free at talesoftanglewood.com

Within the pages of the book, readers will discover Colin, a child who is fully aware of the hidden world of myth and wonder hiding within the woods just beyond his home, long kept secret by old magic. Only the fey magic which runs through his veins has enabled Colin to find what others cannot; the Tanglewood, the ‘wood within the woods.

Full of odd characters and creatures of the fey, the Tanglewood is a world of magnificent folklore come to life. As Colin begins to explore the Tanglewood, he will find friendship with the ferrish Ailfrid, the elfin girl Deidre, and Doc Muffingrow, a wise druid.

In the first book, Colin will also find that there is much magic in himself, as well as dangerous enemies who will not let him find solace in the wood so easily. Ailil, King of the Sprites and ruler of The Below, has laid claim to his spirit, and Colin will need the help of his friends and quite a bit of magic to save himself.

You can check out the reviews at Amazon.com and both books are also available on the Amazon Kindle at a low price, and also at Smashwords.com in all other e-formats.

So again, what are some young adult high fantasy books? I’m thinking of writing one so I’d like to know what else is on the market. Also, if you’ve read them could you share your opinion?

hush hush by becca fitzpatrick – the writing wasn’t brilliant but the story line and characters made up for that. It’s about a girl who falls for the fallen.

Wicked lovely series – it’s about faeries but the main character is one I read a lot about – stubborn, allways gets her own way, her opinion is the one that’s right. She is stupid and grrrr. And the book itself goes on and on about boring stuff it’s like – get to the point!!!

house of night – the main girl is ridiculous. All the boys fall over her and she hates cows and £luts and becomes the biggest one of them. The "twins" are so annoying you want to shoot them. It’s about a stupid idiot that goes to a vampyre (yeah, it’s spelt like that LOL) Academy school thing and becomes the most popular, prettiest , most wanted spoilt brat! The writing is poor as well.

the mortal instruments by cassandra clare – this is a good series and the main boy character is sarcastic and funny. However, the plot was poor. I knew they weren’t really blah blah and so she kept it spinning out till the third book and I already new from the first book that it wasn’t true. The main girl character is like the two above – bossy, spoilt , annoying b1tch that wants her own way. Writers try to portray these girls as strong women but fail miserable. There is a line between bossy and strong.

Evernight by Claudia gray is another vampire book. the main girl character is not like the other three characters above me. She is quite quiet and I could relate to her in many situations. The plot is too overused (vamp falls in love with vamp hunter) but overall it was a good book and so was the series.

shiver by maggie – this is a shapeshifting series and it was good. However, the setting is always in this one small town and not much happens in the book. I can barely remember it. Although it was refreshing reading both points of views and the main girl character is louder than the boy which is different and I like it.

Need by carrie jones. This is about pixies and is very stranged. The main girl reminds me of my friend and she is very very strange. But it gets much much better in captivate . This book features were’s (shapeshifters) and a very clear view on pixies.

Fablehaven by Brandon Mull
Grey Griffins by Derek Benz and JS Lewis
The Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis
The Inkheart Trilogy by Cornelia Funke
Septimus Heap by Angie Sage
The Land of Elyon by Patrick Carman
The Kingdom Keepers by Ridley Pearson
The Kane Chronicles by Rick Riordan

Someone suggested the 39 Clues. First off, you need to know that it isn’t a fantasy series, but an adventure series. Secondly, if you choose to read it (I recommend it, because I absolutely love it), the author is not soley Rick Riordan, but various other authors. The first one is by Rick Riordan, the second Gordon Korman, the third Peter Lerangis, the fourth Jude Watson, the fifth Patrick Carman, the sixth Jude Watson, the seventh Lerangis again, the eighth Korman again, the ninth Linda Sue Park, the tenth and final Margaret Peterson Haddix.

I’m 17 and just got finished with the lord of the rings. I’m getting an itch to read more fantasy books similar to it. If th=theirs any good ones anyone can recommend i’d appreciate it.

In FANTASY here are some I (Fittings Doc) would recommend:
The first 4 books listed are in the same vein as the LOTR.

"The Hobbit" (1937 / 310 pages) by J. R. R. Tolkien
It is the PRECURSOR to the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy.
(It was the book that showed me you could read for PURE enjoyment
rather than to fulfill a school reading assignment.)
Its hero Bilbo Baggins, at the suggestion of the wizard Gandalf, helps some dwarves steal treasure back from a dragon. Bilbo pops up in the beginning and the end of "The Lord of the Rings", and was the first hobbit "ring bearer". (It will be out as a movie in 2012!!!)

"The Dark Tide" (1984) by Dennis L. McKiernan
(first book of the "Mithgar" series)
"The Iron Tower" (an omnibus edition)
Originally published as a trilogy (The Dark Tide, Shadows of Doom, and The Darkest Day).

“The Crystal Shard" (1988) by R.A. Salvatore.
(the first book of "The Icewind Dale Trilogy")

"Pawn of Prophecy" (1982) by David Eddings
(first book of the "Belgariad" series)

"Legend” (1984) by David Gemmell (The MASTER of Heroic fantasy)
(first book of the “Drenai Saga”)
Hell EVERYTHING by David Gemmell is worth reading!!!
He is a master at character development and readability.
If you like HEROIC FANTASY, You’ll find you cannot put his books down.

"An Oblique Approach" (1998) by Eric Flint & David Drake
(first book of the "Belisarius" series)

"The Misplaced Legion" (1987) by Harry Turtledove
(first book of the "Videssos" series)
One of Julius Caesar’s legions is transported to a world with magic.

"Magician" (1982) by Raymond E. Feist
(first book in "The Riftwar Saga")

“The Seer King” (1997) By Chris Bunch
(first book of “The Seer King Trilogy”)

“Luck in the Shadows” (1996) by Lynn Flewelling
(first book of the “Nightrunner” series)

"Jhereg" (1983) by Steven Brust
(first book of the "Vlad Taltos" / "Dragaeran" series)
A human works as a killer for hire for, and of, immortals.

"The Stealer of Souls" (1963) by Michael Moorcock
(first book of "The Elric Saga")

“Assassin’s Apprentice” (1995) by Robin Hobb
(first book of “The Farseer Trilogy”)
Fitz a royal bastard becomes a trained assassin for the king.

"The Riddle-Master of Hed" (1976) by Patricia A. McKillip
(first book of "The Riddle-Master trilogy")

"The First Book of Swords" (1983) by Fred Saberhagen
(first book of the "Books of the Swords" series)

“The Gilded Chain” (1998) by Dave Duncan
(first book of the “Tales of the King’s Blades” series)

"The Sword of Shannara" (1977) by Terry Brooks
(first book in the Original "Shannara Trilogy")

"Sheepfarmer’s Daughter" by Elizabeth Moon
(first book of the “Deed of Paksenarrion” trilogy)
It has a FEMALE main character.

“Talon of the Silver Hawk” (2003) by Raymond E. Feist
(first book of “Conclave of Shadows” series)

In HUMOROUS FANTASY here are some I (Fittings Doc) would recommend:

"Another Fine Myth" (1978) by Robert Lynn Asprin
(the first book of the "Myth Adventure" Series)
It revolves around a boy from Klah (hence he is a Klahd) becoming a magician with the help of his mentor a demon (dimensional traveler) from Perv (so he is a Pervect NOT a Pervert).

"Wizard’s Bane" (1989) by Rick Cook
(first book of the ""Wiz" Zumwalt / Wizardy" series)
A computer "Wiz" get transported to a magiocal kingdom where his computer approach to magic lets him "compile" magical success.

oh man, you should read Terry Good Kind.
"sword of truth"
it has the medieval world.
also if you want, read "Wheels of Time."

this is also set in medieval, but it’s more of assassins and mages.
it’s a very good story, you will love it.
it’s called.
"Night Angel"

or you can also read "inheritance" Eragon about dragon rider.

so my recommend are:
1. Sword of Truth
2. Wheels of Time
3. Night Angel trilogy
4. Inheritance
