Most publishers also want people who know basic grammar and spell correctly.

Do you have an prior published material such as poems, short stories, etc?

You might want to look into submitting your work to literary journals first. However, you can pick up a copy of "Writer’s Market" (or you can go to the library and look at it there because it’s quite expensive.)

In that book you will find The names of publishers and editors and what they are looking for. http://www.writersmarket.com/

After you’ve browsed through the publishers…you have to learn how to write a great query letter/book proposal. Without one (and it has to be perfect) the editors won’t even consider you.

I don’t know how other authors get inspiration, but in my case, it’s usually generated by curiosity. I’ve had seven books of non-fiction published, and each began when I started to wonder about something. A little research, then a little more, and first thing you know, a story was shaping itself.
It was a little different when I decided to try fiction – that mainly involved creating my character, getting to know her really well, and then imagining how she might react in different situations. And gradually, this wound itself into a storyline.

Most publishing houses don’t do much, if anything, for new writers as far as promotion goes. (this could be negotiated during the deal if you have an agent.) So that means it is all up to the writer. I don’t think they check up on you to make sure you’re doing enough promotion. If you want your book to sell you’ll do it yourself, if you don’t then it won’t sell and they simply won’t work with you again.

As far as I know, its that simple.

They pretty much put the book in store and see where it goes. You are expected to promote it, but if you don’t they won’t hound you (as far as I know). But it is still in your (as the author) best interest to do as much promotion as physically possible. (some agents help with this too.)

If so, if they refuse do they run the risk of not getting their book published.

Unless the book is ridiculously popular, I doubt a new author would get a signing. Before book signings are even considered, the book is usually already published. Whether the author "has" to go to the book signing depends on the contract he/she signs with the publishers; from what I understand, some publishers require the writer to actively promote his/her book as a condition of publication while others don’t. In any case, if you’re an amateur author (teenage or otherwise) trying to write a book and you want to get it published and you’re thinking "oh, but what if I got FAMOUS? I mean, God, I want people to like the book and all but how will I ever live a NORMAL life again?" please stop yourself right now. It’s the one in a million author whose book gets famous enough for people to actually want to go to a book signing. 99.9% of authors don’t become "famous" and all, possibly excluding those people like JK Rowling whose books are international phenomena, pretty much no authors have to deal with the issues of celebrity. If you by chance aren’t one of the people I describe, please forgive my tedious rant. I’m just tired of hearing from young authors who seem to think that getting published and becoming famous are a given when the odds of the first are pretty slim and the odds of the second are almost non-existent.
