There are numerous hyper-emotional romance books and films out there. They all follow the same basic plot line. Boy meets girl. There is some social or economic difference between boy and girl. At first, this makes things exciting. Then, intervening friends or family members of one side or both cause the relationship to sour. At this point, a number of things can happen, but often, one of them dies or is permanently separated from the love of their life.

The end.

Well, some of those books are literally porn. They have explicit sex scenes that are meant to be masturbation aids.

If the book doesn’t literally contain porn, I’d say it’s more analogous to stupid action movies than to porn. It’s simple wish-fulfillment that appeals to that little spot inside you that’s secretly not modern or feminist at all and wants to play out a raging gender cliche.

I’ve noticed at my local bookstores, Chapters, Indigo and Coles here in Canada, that there are some romance books in the fiction section. For example, Nicholas Sparks books are all in the fiction section as well as Jane Austen and others that are clearly romances. It’s not that they’re the cheesey romances you would find in the supermarket, but they’re still romances, why aren’t they in the romance section? What makes these in the fiction and the other romances in romance? Where do you draw the line?
Thank you.

There are two very distinct types of romance novels: classic romance and modern romance. Modern romance was born in the early 1970’s. It’s somewhat trashy and explicit. The romance section is populated by modern romance novels. Pick up a romance from the romance section and read it. Read a few of them. Compare what you’ve read to Jane Austen. The differences in the two types should be crystal clear.

Other novels may contain some romance without having romance and sex being the driving force behind the story. I call these classic romance, and they areshelved within the general fiction section. This is done to provide a clear separation from the modern romance novel. Examples of classic romance include Atonement, Birdsong, Pride and Prejudice, and Corelli’s Mandolin. Sure there is romance in the novels, possibly even some sex. However, the main story is not simply how two people hooked up.

You should definetly check out the Blue Bloods series by Melissa De La Cruz. There are 6 books and 2 companion books so far. The cool thing about these series is that the companion books you don’t have to read but they act like encyclopedias for when your halfway through the series, and also contain like "behind the scene" moments of the characters relationships, fights, etc. Here’s the list in order:
1. Blue Bloods
2. Masquerade
3. Revelations
4. The Van Alen Legacy
5. Misguided Angel
6. Lost in Time
*The last book in this series doesn’t come out till January 2013.
**Once you get through the series, there’s actually a character in the books that’s gonna start having her own series which is cool.
***The companion books: Keys to the Repository and Bloody Valentine. Keys to the Repository comes in between The Van Alen Legacy and Misguided Angel and Bloody Valentine comes in between Misguided Angel and Lost in Time
Hope this helps! I recommend this series =)

So I’m 15 and I love to read! I like books when they have at least a sequel or more books to them. I just read The Boys next door and Endless summer, they were good. I also read the summer i turned pretty series which was my favorite. I need some more books to read! Any teen romance books in the summer would be perfect. (I’ve also read Twilight and liked it.) Thanks so much.

~The Immortals by Alyson Noel (the romance is a bit like twilight but there’s no vampires and werewolfs)
~The Uglies Series by Scott Westerfeld (at 16, everyone has plastic surgery to become "Pretties." Shay decides she doesn’t want the surgery, and runs away, pushing her best friend Tally into a world of chaos. The authorities offer Tally a choice: find Shay and bring her home, or never turn Pretty at all)
~Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher (before a girl kills herself, she records thirteen tapes sending them to 13 people explaining why they played a part in her suicide )
~Delirium by Lauren Oliver (a girl lives in a world where Love is a disease, at 18 she will have the cure to it and never have to worry about it ever again, but soon before her 18th birthday she falls in love)
~The Mortal Instruments (it’s complicated, but basically, these kids, shadowhunters fight demons … lots of romance …, REALLY GOOD!!)
~The Hunger Games (probably hard to miss this one, but in case you have, each year a boy and girl are each chosen from 12 districts, they’re placed in an arena where they must fight to death)
~Hush Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick (This darkly romantic story features our heroine, Nora Grey, a seemingly normal teenage girl with her own shadowy connection to the Nephilim, and super-alluring bad boy, Patch, now her deskmate in biology class. Together they find themselves at the centre of a centuries-old feud between a fallen angel and a Nephilim…)
~The Abandon Trilogy by Meg Cabot (Seventeen-year-old Pierce knows what happens to us when we die. That’s how she met John Hayden, the mysterious stranger who’s made returning to normal life—or at least life as Pierce knew it before the accident—next to impossible.)
~The Goddess Test by Aimee Carter (It’s always been just Kate and her mom—and her mother is dying. Then she meets Henry. He claims to be Hades, god of the Underworld—and if she accepts his bargain, he’ll keep her mother alive while Kate tries to pass seven tests.)
