When I was 13 (so….1992), I read a book about a virus/bacteria strain that could essentially regenerate things that had once been alive (animals/people). I wanna say that it killed you and THEN brought you back, but not certain. It was kept in some lab underground and somehow it gets airborne and spreads. At the end of the book, it talks about how everything is immortal now and no one needs to eat food anymore, etc.

I don’t remember much more about the storyline, nor the title, not the author. I always thought it was called Lake of Fire or something, but I can’t find anything along those lines. I remember it being in the 400-500 pages range. And it was paperback when I read it, but I think it was a pretty recent release at the time.

Does this ring a bell to anyone? I really want to reread this book now that i’m older.

Are there any other movies with this theme? I’d love to know.

well there set in the future and there are allot of reports about how there won’t be enough resources for people in the future so I thing it’s being based of that but it’s the same when you (going video games here) look at the game Halo it starts out with each country going into a technological fight and start wars with each other and almost destroy each other or when they fight the aliens they encounter the human race could be destroyed but eventually gain a treaty but if you look at some reports that ore going on now I think the Sci-Fi stuff is being based of of all the stuff going on now and what allot of people think may happen.

I watched in the early nineties, do not remember even one time say, two people (maybe wrong) are in the desert of some buildings, remember that above all etitmi buildings is some force field through which they can not pass, they still chtoli some demon has there. It seems there are more electrical wires to a film treatment, though could be wrong.

like with the two men had another, but he was killed and his body moved like a demon, he won and took out the two?

It does not, in my film structures are likely to be a base, a group of houses can, just remember the force field, a place like the desert, at the expense of the rest could be wrong.

it’s not The Time Guardian 1987
Zeiram 1994

I’m not sure what you’re trying to ask either.

So I’ll suggest watching a science fiction movie that’s got some humor to it. How about "Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Fifth Dimension"….it’s a CLASSIC!

Hi guys, I have the research, I don’t want people to give me the answer, just a guide line in what to talk in the essay, possibly help me break it down, need to do 3,000.
Can you tell me how many words to write in each section, please break it down.

Here is the question!

1) Science fiction has a rich and varied set of cultural and historical traditions. With reference to at least two different film and/or television texts discuss the evolution of Science Fiction as a genre. You should consider its literary origins as well as discussing how science fiction is a lens through which to view the social, political and technological progress and anxiety.

Without knowing the areas you intend to cover or the direction you want to take and especially your ultimate conclusion, starting you off is a tad difficult.

Science Fiction – A pre cursor to the Science facts of today or just fantasy? You decide

Sci-Fi started out as a minority pulp fiction genre, supplied mainly in low quality magazines. Publishers paid by the story and attracted some good writers and history goes on to show that it has not only become main stream but has also spawned sub genres of its own.

Off the top of my head.

Like, if you were categorizing a book, what would you be looking for? And I know that sci-fi means science fiction, but what would you say would be the difference between that and fantasy?

And I generally write with supernatural creatures, so would those be sci-fi or fantasy? Or would it depend on the creature? And what about angels? Or things I make up that aren’t, like, vampires or werewolves or witches or fairies?

I know those are a lot or questions, so just answer any part of it that you can, and I would really appreciate it.

I have a hard time defining these two genres, that’s why I’m a strong believer in the genre called "science fantasy" for the in-between books.

Typically, if I see a book with elves, dragons, wizards, magic, trolls, and goblins, then I consider it fantasy.
However, there’s different genres of fantasy. Dark fantasy, epic fantasy, science fantasy, urban fantasy, New Age fantasy, historical fantasy, etc.

Supernatural creatures can belong in either fantasy or sci-fi. For example, the book and movie "I Am Legend" had zombie-like creatures but there was a scientific explanation for their existence.

I don’t think the genre has so much to do with the creatures you make-up. For example, the Na’Vi are made up creatures, but they belong to a science fiction/science fantasy genre. If they could do full-blown magic and lived in Middle Earth, then they’d be fantasy.

Setting plays an important part, too.

The book is a young adult or maybe teen fiction about a girl from a faraway galaxy with her father and another man. She comes to Earth (I believe) to stop another species from destroying everything. The other species has invented an advanced machine that eats wood and spews fire so the humans think it’s a dragon. There’s a human boy who goes after the dragon since the king is offering a reward for whoever kills it. The boy comes upon the alien girl and she helps him in hopes of getting closer to the enemy species.

They fall in love, she ends up being captured along with the human boy but the other two alien men save them. She has to leave in the end even though she knows she loves the boy because she also realizes she doesn’t belong there.

I don’t remember any more and I’m not sure if the details I gave are completely accurate. But I’d be soooo grateful to anyone who could help me with figuring out what this book was called.

The only clues I have that may help were that I read the book 5 years ago so it was published then and that the title had something to do with "the stars". Ex) "Follow the stars"

Thank you!

"Enchantress From the Stars" by Sylvia Louise Engdahl- one of my favorite books in junior high!

"The Federation Anthropological Service would never officially have allowed Elana to be on this mission to the medieval planet Andrecia. If Youngling peoples found out that a supremely advanced and enlightened society like the Federation existed, it would irreparably damage their evolution. Stowing away aboard her father’s ship, Elana suddenly becomes the key to a dangerous plan to turn back the invasion of Andrecia by an aggressive, space-faring Youngling civilization. How can she possibly help the Andrecians, who still believe in magic and superstition, against a force armed with advanced technology — without revealing her alien powers?

Apprentice medical officer Jarel wishes that the planet the Imperial Exploration Corps has chosen to colonize didn’t have a "humanoid" population already living on it. The invaders don’t consider the Andrecians to be human, and Jarel has seen the atrocious treatment the natives get from his people. How can he make a difference, when he alone regrets the destruction that his people bring?

Georyn, youngest son of a poor Andrecian woodcutter, knows only that there is a terrible dragon on the other side of the enchanted forest, and he is prepared to do whatever it takes to defeat it. In his mind, Elana is the Enchantress from the Stars who has come to test him, to prove he is worthy of defeating the dragon and its powerful minions. Despite both Elana’s and Jarel’s inner turmoil, Georyn’s burden is by far the heaviest. Ultimately, he must pit his innocent faith in the magic of his Enchantress from the Stars against foes who have come from a world beyond his comprehension. "

Just finished reading A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin and absolutely loved it. I’m a pretty well read reader but haven’t read too many sci fi or fantasy series, I typically just read standalone novels. I’m looking to read a great sci fi or fantasy series, or even a general fiction series. If you read a really great standalone book and really enjoyed it, please recommend it if you think it’d be worth reading. Please recommend something that you really enjoyed! Thanks.

If you like humorous fantasy I highly recommend the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett. My very favorite series, they are so funny and full of great characters.

The Stainless Steel Rat series by Harry Harrison is a lot of fun too.

I also liked the Adept series by Piers Anthony, and his Incarnations of Immortality series.

On a darker note, there is The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever by Stephen R. Donaldson. I’ve read the first trilogy and it was very good. There is another trilogy called The Second Chronicles of Thomas Covenant but I haven’t read those.

There is The Gaea Trilogy by John Varley, I really enjoyed it though I thought the second and third books (Wizard and Demon) were much better than the first (Titan).

I also love the Dragonriders of Pern books by Anne McCaffrey

Ok, so I’m writing a novel and I’m 3/4 the way complete when I ran into a slight dilemma…I’m not quite sure what Fiction sub-genre (if any) my story belongs to. So I will give you a quick look-see at what elements I have:

-The use of a magic system
-The story takes place in far future (3050 to be exact)
-space travel
-fictional creatures/races
-advanced technology
-defiance of known natural laws

I know this might seem quite odd that the author doesn’t know the exact genre of her own story, BUT I only ask because I’ve never read any sci-fi books, so I’m not sure if this is just fiction with futuristic elements…or sci-fi in the making.

Another reason why I ask is because I don’t want any sci-fi enthusiasts to hound me for writing a bad sci-fi book…when that wasn’t really my aim to begin with!
In response to stmichaeldet response:

I was writing this work based on a source that many might not be familiar with to begin with, that source is Japanese style RPGs (fantasy/adventure) like the Star Ocean series, which has 90% sci-fi elements, and %10 magic (fantasy). I have played plenty to know exactly what I am aiming to write, HOWEVER in the book world, a clearer classification is required, that is why I posted this question, to figure out where it best falls. Perhaps I should have asked if it is Fantasy, or Sci-fi, but based on the answers thus far, I’d probably say this is a cross-genre novel.

Sounds like a cross-genre SF/F, what with the combination of science and magic. Nothing wrong with that.
