How many words in a novel do publishers look for?

I’m writing a novel, and I want to know… Do publishers look for a particular number for a first book?

Novel – over 40,000 words
Novella – 17,500 to 40,000 words
Novelette – 7,500 to 17,500 words
Short story – under 7,500 words

They don’t look for just any number, as other answers said, it depends on the audience.

  2. Well generally a novel has to have 50,000 just to be considered a novel. So I would say, 50,000 words.

Im a writer. I’ve asked the same questions may times.

  3. I’m not really sure but on http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1814574.aspx sunnflr comment: "Humm, not sure about a self-help book. I don’t know if they have set limits. I do know I’ve read that for fiction, a book is considered a novel after 50,000 words."

Also i’m pretty sure they don’t just look for that they look for the very beginning of the book, to see if it will catch a reader’s eye, to make that person keep reading. I also think they look for a lot of detail. if you put a lot of detail you might not even have a problem writing a 50,000+ work book.

    Hoped this helped

  4. It depends on the age of the intended reader and, to a certain extent, the genre – an epic fantasy can be longer than a romance, for example. Novels for adults average around 100,000 words.

  5. Honestly, it depends on the genre. But, basically, 50,000 words would be a minimum for most kinds.

Fantasy books tend to be leaning on 100,000 words…
Young adult novels tend to be around 60,000 words…

Shoot for 50,000 words. Trust me, that’s pretty small for a novel, so you’ll likely find yourself going a bit above. I thought I would barely make 40,000 words, but I ended up with 60,000. That was 200 pages in standard manuscript format. For me.

I wouldn’t go above 100,000 words for a first novel, or under 50,000.

  7. over 9,000 but not usually more than 300,000. The exceptions to that would be like, Harry Potter, Twilight, and so forth in reference to those mongo books out there.
