What would be a good crime for a mystery/suspense novel?

I have 2 detectives (Samuel Harding and Annabel Mathieu) and victims, as well as someone looking for the detectives’ help. It takes place in the late 1800s or early 1900s.

I’ve never written a mystery/suspense novel, and I decided to give it a try.

Train robberies are good for older settings i personally can make a good plot out of a serial killer who eventually starts targeting the detectives family until there is no family left so the other dtective is killed
