In a book that’s one part prophecy, one part thought experiment, one part manifesto, and one part survival manual, internet impresario and blogging pioneer Jeff Jarvis reverse-engineers Google—the fastest-growing company in history—to discover forty clear and straightforward rules to manage and live by. At the same time, he illuminates the new worldview of the internet generation: how it challenges and destroys, but also opens up vast new opportunities. His findings are counterintuitive, imaginative, practical, and above all visionary, giving readers a glimpse of how everyone and everything must evolve in the Google era.

Jeff Jarvis is the proprietor of one of the Web’s most popular and respected blogs about the internet and media, Buzzmachine.com. He also writes the new media column for the Guardian in London. He was named one of 100 worldwide media leaders by the World Economic Forum at Davos in 2007 and 2008, and he was the creator and founding editor of Entertainment Weekly. He is on the faculty of the City University of New York Graduate School of Journalism in New York City.

Simon Critchley studied philosophy at the University of Essex in England (BA 1985, PhD 1988) and at the University of Nice in France (M.Phil 1987). Among his teachers were Robert Bernasconi, Jay Bernstein, Frank Cioffi, Dominique Janicaud and Onora O’Neill. Critchley’s M.Phil. thesis dealt with the problem of the overcoming of metaphysics in Heidegger and Carnap and his Ph.D. dissertation was on the ethics of deconstruction in Emmanuel Levinas and Jacques Derrida.

After a position as University Fellow at Cardiff University, Critchley was appointed Lecturer in Philosophy at Essex in 1989, where he became Reader in 1995 and Professor in 1999. Also at the University of Essex, he was Director of the Centre for Theoretical Studies and collaborated closely with Ernesto Laclau.

Critchley was President of the British Society for Phenomenology from 1994-99. In 1997 and 2001, he held a Humboldt Research Fellowship in Philosophy at the University of Frankfurt. Between 1998-2004, Critchley was a Programme Director of the Collège international de philosophie, Paris. In 2006-7, he was a Scholar at the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles. Since 2004 he has been Professor of Philosophy at the New School for Social Research, New York, but also continues as a part-time Professor at Essex. In addition, he has held visiting professorships at Nijmegen (1997), the Universities of Sydney (2000), Notre Dame (2002), Cardozo Law School in New York (2005), and Oslo (2006).

On Humour is a fascinating and beautifully written book on what philosophy can tell us about humor and about what it is to be human. Simon Critchley probes some of the most perennial features of humor, such as our tendency to laugh at animals and our bodies, why we mock death with comedy and why we think it’s funny when people start to act like machines. He also looks as the darker side of humor, as when rife with sexism and racism, and shows how humor might remind us of people we would rather not be. Above all, Simon Critchley argues that humor can tell us much about the human condition, the meaning of life and why comedy itself begins in philosophy.

This event took place on May 14, 2008.

Newsweek International Editor and television personality Fareed Zakaria, author of the best-selling The Post-American World, and host of CNNs Fareed Zakaria GPS, was chosen India Abroad Person of the Year 2008 at the National Museum of the American Indian in New York on March 20.
Acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair, winner of the India Abroad Person of the Year Award 2007, presented Dr Zakaria with his award at a star-studded ceremony.
The annual awards gala has become a marquee event on the Indian-American community calendar, and the quality of previous winners has made it a cachet even for those Indian Americans who have widespread mainstream acceptance. Past winners include Iowa legislator Swati Dandekar in 2002; co-founder, Indicorps, Sonal Shah in 2003; Mohini Bhardwaj, captain of the silver medal-winning American gymnastic team at the Sydney Olympics in 2004; then US Congressman Bobby Jindal in 2005; Pepsico Chairperson Indra Nooyi in 2006 and Nair in 2007.
India Abroad is the oldest and most widely circulated weekly newspaper serving the Indian-American community, published out of New York, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles and Toronto. It is owned by Rediff.com
Opening honors went to a trio of prodigiously talented children: Sameer Mishra, winner of the national Scripps National Spelling Bee; Akshay Rajagopal, who won the equally prestigious National Geography Bee; and Shivani Sud, who won the national Intel Science Talent Search contest.
This year, India Abroad instituted a new award: The Face of the Future Award. On debut, it was won by Manjul Bhargava, the mathematical genius who solved a problem that had baffled the best minds for 200 years, and who became at age 28, one of the youngest full professors ever at Princeton University.
The 2008 US presidential election cycle saw an unprecedented level of community involvement; it also witnessed a generational shift in leadership with the younger members of the community coming into the limelight.
In recognition of this, the India Abroad Gopal Raju Award for Community Service, named after the newspapers late founder, was shared by seven young Indian-American leaders at the forefront of this change: Preeta Bansal, General Counsel in the Office of Management and Budget at the Obama White House; Nick Rathod, Director of the Office of Inter-Governmental Affairs in the Obama administration; co-founders of South Asians for Obama Hrishi Karthikeyan and Dave Kumar; founder of the Indian National Leadership Initiative Varun Nikore; Communications Director for the Campaign for Americas Future Toby Choudhuri; and newly appointed chair of the Indian American Republican Council Dino Teppara.
To honour a legendary career that has spanned five decades, and to mark the career of a man who, single-handedly, has planted Indias flag at the pinnacle of Western classical music, India Abroad presented this years Award for Lifetime Achievement to ace conductor Zubin Mehta. On hand to honour Mehta with the Award were previous winners, novelist Salman Rushdie and the economist couple Professor Jagdish Bhagwati and Professor Padma Desai.
The India Abroad Publishers Award for Special Excellence — a prize previously won by achievers like astronaut Sunita Williams — was awarded to novelist Jhumpa Lahiri, who in 2008 published her third work of fiction, a collection of short stories titled Unaccustomed Earth that in unprecedented fashion debuted at the top of the prestigious New York Times bestseller lists.
The event, emceed by Columbia Journalism School Professor Sreenath Sreenivasan, came to a fitting conclusion when Fareed Zakaria accepted his award as the India Abroad Person of the Year 2008.
The event, which was punctuated by a sit-down dinner at the halfway stage, was attended by among others Meghan Mylan, who won an Oscar last month for her documentary Smile Pinky; Infosys Co-Chairman Nandan Nilekani; world-renowned cancer specialist Dr Dattatreyudu Nori; showbiz personalities like actress Madhur Jaffrey and actor Abhay Deol; Director of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra Zarin Mehta; Indias Consul General in New York Ambassador Prabhu Dayal; New Jersey Assemblyman Upendra Chivukula; Rujuta Vaidya, who choreographed the Slumdog Millionaire dance numbers at the recent Academy Awards; CFO, District of Columbia, Natwar Gandhi.

DIALOGUE

THE PUBLIC KNOWS RICK CASTLE AS THE FAMOUS NOVELIST WITH A WILD SIDE.

Castle: I’d be happy to let you spank me.

DETECTIVE KATE BECKETT…

Beckett: Police!

HAS HER OWN OPINION.

Beckett: He is annoying
Castle: Excuse me?
Beckett: Self-centered, egotistical, and completely –
Castle: Saucy!
Beckett: Ugh!

BUT WHAT ABOUT HIS FRIENDS? WHAT DO THEY THINK OF HIM?

Cannell: He’s a little arrogant sometimes, but he’s the best. I love Rick.
Connelly: I’m pretty jealous of Rick.

WE CAUGHT UP WITH BEST-SELLING AUTHORS STEPHEN J. CANNELL AND MICHAEL CONNELLY AT THEIR WEEKLY POKER GAME.

Castle: We could always make it strip poker.
Beckett: Sorry, but I prefer mystery to horror.

TO GET THE INSIDE SCOOP ON AMERICAN’S MOST COLORFUL CRIME-WRITER.

Cannell: You can’t argue with Ricky’s success. I see around at different New York parties. And he always has some incredible hot-lookin’ woman on his arm.
Connelly: I know he lives a life not at all like mine. I’m not shadowing the cops.

Beckett: It’s accompany and observe, not participate and annoy. Got it?
Castle: Participate and annoy’s a lot more fun, but all right.

SHADOWING COPS? IS THAT WHERE HE GOT THE INSPIRATION FOR NIKKI HEAT, THE HEROINE OF HIS NEXT NOVEL, “HEAT WAVE?”

Cannell: Far be it for me to talk about Rick’s muse.

Beckett: Call me a muse again, and I will break both your legs. Kay?

AND WHAT DO THEY THINK ABOUT THE BOOK?

Cannell: I think this is the best work he’s ever done.
Connelly: It comes from, you know, first-hand experience.

With the fourth and final fantasy book now published, fantasy readers can begin a new quest for wealth and power with this complete series of four fantasy novels by Tracy Falbe from Brave Luck Books (TM).

From the back cover of Union of Renegades: The Rys Chronicles Book I (a free download from http://www.braveluck.com

Dreibrand Veta has killed for his country. At the frontlines of imperial expansion, he seeks to rebuild the fortune of his noble family. In his daring travels, he encounters the rys, a race far more powerful than the human empire that bred him. Dreibrand cannot defy the rys Queen Onja nor defend his companion, Miranda, and her children from the wicked tyrant queen. Desperate for help, Dreibrand and Miranda join Shan, a rys with emerging powers who plans to challenge Onja. In Shan’s pursuit of the rys throne, he exerts his magical powers, gathers his allies, and incites rebellion among Onja’s human subjects. Great wealth and power will reward the kings, warriors, and spies that align themselves with the rys pretender, but defeat could mean worse than death. Onja can imprison souls and her genocidal rage is legendary. Everything is at risk for Shan’s Union of Renegades.

Subaru Forester. Rising gas prices are compelling large SUV owners to turn to small crossovers like the Subaru Forester. An agile vehicle built to handle most anything man or nature can throw at it, the third-generation Forester has a contemporary exterior complemented by a spacious interior and a smooth, quiet ride.

With competent four-cylinder Boxer engines and standard all-wheel drive, the Forester offers the capability of an SUV with fuel economy that won’t break the bank. This segment has seen a lot of growth in the last few years, but the Forester can go places the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Saturn VUE and Nissan Rogue can’t.
