Thanks, I will choose the best answer!
Non-fiction is limited to reality. The story telling techniques in fiction are not limited to what happened, but what the author wants to happen. A toaster can sing (personification), a man can walk 500miles in an hour (hyperbole), an annoying friend that follows you everywhere is a lost puppy (metaphor), etc. Non-fiction can be creative, memoir especially, but it is limited to the actions and thoughts of everyday life, not the possibilities.
